Singin Westwood 10

Adrian Cohen-Neil started a summer camp in Westwood in 2009 in response to the interest and demand shown by children and parents for good performance skills education in the area.

The camp began life as the Westwood Stage School before Adrian brought it under the umbrella of Upstage Theatre Arts Schools, his well-established theater arts organization operating out of South Pasadena.

Like its sister school, Upstage Westwood offers young performers the opportunity to develop their skills in acting, singing, and dance. The school currently runs a three week summer camp focusing on the production of a show from rehearsal through to final performance in a proper theatre, and complete with costumes, lighting and scenery. In addition to the summer camp, we also offer an after school program consisting of a scene study class held in the evening once a week.

Upstage Westwood provides young actors, singers and dancers with a creatively stimulating and enjoyable environment for them to develop their confidence, make new friends and demonstrate their talents.

Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a host of favorite Dr Seuss characters are brought to life in Seussical. Filled with the spirit of imagination, this colorful show transports us from the Jungle of Nool, to the Circus McGurkus, to the invisible world of the Whos.

The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge — not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, and is the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." The powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged, but ultimately emerge triumphant, in a story that makes you laugh and cry.

Written by Tony award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Once On This Island, Ragtime), this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza is, for good reason, one of the most performed shows in America.
